ABOUT THE COURSE:

The innovations in vehicle architectures and systems that enable cutting edge success in the electric hybrid automotive which are of high demand in the recent years. Knowledge on automotive system and integration with multidisciplinary system including electronics and instrumentation is the key focus of this autotronics course. This course highly focus towards providing an exposure to the student community about the automotive instrumentation. Automotive electronic system concentrating on improving the engine controls, transmission drivetrains, actuators, automotive sensors, governing control systems, MEMS based devices for energy efficient systems and IOT enabled automotive diagnostic of automotive systems.

Week 1: Automotive Instrumentation: The system approach to control and Instrumentation, electronic fundamentals, I/O signal flows and conversions, Multiplexing.

Week 2: Automotive Instrumentation: fuel quantity measurement, coolant temperature measurement, oil pressure measurement, vehicle speed measurement, display devices and intelligent glass cockpit, Engine management system.

Week 3: Automotive actuators and Transmission systems: Actuator operations, Actuator for fuel injectors, gas circulation, idle speed control

Week 4: Automotive actuators and Transmission systems: ABS actuators, electronic unit injectorsComputer controlled dampers, Piezo electric energy harvesters.

Week 5: Automotive actuators and Transmission systems: Transmission mechatronics system for electric hybrid vehicle 4 Wheel and 2 Wheel drives, Steer by wire and intelligent braking.

Week 6: Automotive Sensors and MEMS systemsElectromagnetic sensors, optical sensors, combustion knock sensors

Week 7: Automotive Sensors and MEMS systems variable resistance type sensors, tyre pressure sensing, temperature sensors, ride height control sensors.

Week 8: Automotive Sensors and MEMS systems manifold absolute pressure sensor, exhaust gas oxygen sensor, air low sensors, accelerometers and other sensors for steering by wire

Week 9: Vehicle control systemsAir fuel control, spark timing control, transmission control, clutch for awd, hybrid vehicles control

Week 10: Vehicle control systems series parallel split hybrid and feedback based supervisory control, cruise control, ABS control and control for fuel systems

Prof.Palani Iyamperumal Anand

Dr. I. A. Palani is working as a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the IIT Indore. After completing his Doctorate from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, He worked as a post doctoral research scientist in Graduate school of Information science and electrical Engineering, Kyushu University, Japan. He has developed Mechatronics and Instrumentation Lab at IIT Indore. His area of expertise includes laser assisted surface processing, micro-machining, Smart materials and shape memory alloys. He has published more than 100 international journal publications and he has filed 6 Indian Patents. He has executed project from different funding agencies such as DST, SERB, DAAD, JSPS, DRDO, MHRD worth 6 crores. He has closely worked with industries such as Volvo Eischer, John Deere, WABCO as technical consultant. He has strong research collaboration with University of IFW Dresden Germany, Kyushu University, Japan and Jeju University, South Korea, St Petersburg state University, Russia and Purdue University, US. He is a life member in Indian Laser Association, RRCAT Indore and Smart materials and structures, IISC Bangalore.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: April 18, 2026 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Indore. It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
